We often get asked if we can make one-off products for folks.
A tremendous amount of time and work goes into designing and producing all of our products. First, we have an idea for a product. Then we make mock ups, sometimes by hand out of cardboard to test fit and get dimensions. Then our in house designer Damon, draws up our designs in CAD on his computer with very detailed dimensions and specifications. Those drawings are then sent to our team in Mexico where we work with the appropriate workshop to produce a prototype. The prototype is made, and sent back to either Shane in Mexico, or Damon in Portland for testing on and in our vehicles. Often times tweaks are required, and we edit the CAD drawings, and repeat this process until we have a design that we are happy with. After a final prototype is made that we approve, the workshop then provides us with a cost per unit and order minimums, typically 50-100 units depending on size and complexity. Then, with the design and price approved, we move to production, ordering our leather or other materials, and waiting typically 1-3 months for the production run to be scheduled and completed. The full production run is then packaged up and shipped to us in Portland for distribution. This process in total amounts to hundreds of hours of combined work. It is not fast and it is not cheap. The process to complete one custom design from start to finish can cost several thousand dollars or more. If after reading this and now having a basic understanding of the time and costs involved you would like to work with us on developing your design, please get in touch. We would love to help you design and produce your own leather or woven product in Mexico.
